What is Organic?

So what really is considered "organic?" It's a word that has become so common it's almost meaningless. So many companies have jumped on the bandwagon, and "greenwashing" is so prevalent that it’s hard to navigate one's way in an organic world. 

The concept of organic farming has been around a long time. The idea began in the 1930s in response to the industrialization of agriculture when newly created chemicals to control pests and increase yields were introduced.

Even back then, consumers were interested in non-chemically treated, non-pesticide, minimally modified foods. Today, that mindset has grown to encompass not just the food we eat but the plants home gardeners grow as well. If you're buying organic food, why would you use synthetic fertilizers in your yard?
